A Snooker table is used to play Snooker games like carom snookers, pocket snookers, or snooker. Regardless of the game, the table used in all these games is made of similar materials and they almost resemble in sizes. All snooker table are flat rectangular surface made of slate, covered by a cloth and surrounded by elastic cushions. The tables used in the three games differ slightly in dimension only. We will take a look at billiards/pool/snooker one by one.

History of Billiards/Pool/Snooker Table

The table used earlier for billiards game were very costly. The table beds were made of wood so they usually warped after few years. No standard sizes or shapes were predefined. The manufacturing of billiards table took a U-turn in 1826. John Thurston of England invented the slate bed, thus providing the table a far smoother surface. Slate was a lot heavier than wood, so the tables were a lot sturdier. Further making of the billiard cushions out of vulcanized rubber, cork and leather started. Then the green cloth/felt was introduced to the new slate tables to produce a pool table akin to those used today. Marble tables were also used but only by a small section of premium class, because the costs were too high.

Carom Snooker Tables

Carom Snooker table is used for games like cushion caroms, three cushion snookers, straight rail etc. These tables are pocket less. The shape is almost rectangular and the regular dimensions of a table are: 10′ x 5′. In recent days, 9′ x 4.5′ is becoming popular.

The cloth laid over the billiards table often absorbs moisture. Due to it, the slate is often heated to keep moisture out of cloth and to aid the balls rolling and returning in an efficient manner. Under international rules a heated table is required for some specific carom games.

Pocket Snooker Tables

Pocket Snooker table, also known as pool tables, are used for different pool games like eight-ball, nine-ball, straight pool and one pocket. These tables have six pockets one each at four corners and one each at the mid of each longer sides. The pockets have hanged bags, made of leather or plastic, to collect the balls. There is a drawer below the table, which is connected to all six pockets through channels, which collects all the balls.

Snooker Table

A snooker table measures 11′ 8.5” x 5′ 10”. The height of top of cushion from the floor is between 2′9.5” to 2′10”. There are six pockets of about 3.5” in diameter. Snooker table pockets are rounded as compared to billiards table.

An inconvenience with a full size snooker table is the size of the room (at least 22ft x 16 ft) required to hold the large table. Thus it lessens the number of locations where snooker can easily be played. While pool tables are common to bar and pubs, snooker tends to be played either in private surroundings or in public snooker halls.

Materials

Materials used in different portions of the table have their own characteristics which help in improving the game.

Cushions: All type of snooker tables have cushions along the edges. It is sometimes known as rails too. Cushions are made of elastic materials such as synthetic or vulcanized rubber. The main purpose of cushion is to provide a surface which rebounds the balls without letting them loose much kinetic energy.

Slate: Slate is one of the important factors to consider before buying a billiard table:

The surface of all types of tables are made of slate of thickness between ¾ ” to 2”. One inch slates are most common and approved for tournament play. It either comes as 1 piece or 3 piece. Three piece slate is common and best because it offer a more accurate leveling of your table. Slate should be attached directly to the frame with screws.

The slate joints must be in the same plane within .005 inch after leveling. Tournament tables must have a set of slates consisting of three pieces of equal size with wooden frame of at least ¾ inch (1.905 cm) thick attached underneath the slate.

Rails: Rails must be of solid wood as it play a part in the way the ball returns. The rails must be tightly bound to the table with screws to get the perfect cushion response. Rail width must be between 4inch to 7 ½ inch including the rubber cushions.

Legs: The legs of table must be of wood.

Frame: Frame is that part which is attached to legs and upon which the slate is laid. It is mainly made of two types of materials : Solid wood and MDF.

The Midnight Funk Association was the 12 a.m. one hour segment of the legendary late night Detroit radio DJ Electrifying Mojo, a.k.a Charles Johnson.

An entire generation of faithful fans and listeners from the late 70’s through the early 90’s recognize the radio show for shaping the musical tastes of listeners in the Metropolitan Detroit Area, Northern Ohio, and Eastern Ontario Canada.

Mojo broke many artists in the Detroit market including Prince, The J. Giles Band, The B-52’s and turned audiences on to classic legends like Pink Floyd and Peter Frampton, artist previously unheard on radio stations that were labelled as “black”, or “R and B” .

Nightly at 12 a.m., Mojo called to order The Midnight Funk Association, an homage to some of the great funk bands of the day and of all time.  He frequently played original long versions, and entire sides of albums by George Clinton and Parliament / Funkadelic, Prince, Rick James and many other all time great bands and artists, as well as local groups like Ready For the World.

At the top of the show, Mojo opened membership to the MFA, and members new and old were asked to stand up to show solidarity.

* If you were driving you were to flash your headlights.

* If you were at home, you turned on your porch light. 

* If you were in bed listening to the show, you were required to dance on your back.

And every night for years, people did it !

To become a card carrying member of the MFA, listeners wrote in the radio station and would receive their official MFA I.D. card.

Electrifying Mojo, and the Midnight Funk Association was one of the last great radio music shows of our time.  Many fans of the radio show credit Mojo for being fans of music that they would have otherwise never heard of.  He was a huge influence in turning millions of listeners into Prince fans, and many say was responsible for a six show sell out at Cobo Hall in Detroit in the late 80’s.

It is common to speak to fans of the show that will credit him for turning them on to Peter Frampton, The B-52’s, Pink Floyd, and many other artists that were never heard on Detroit’s “R and B” stations, yet he also supported emerging rap artists like Eric B and Rakim, Run DMC, Whoodini, L.L. Cool J, and the many styles of music heard of the show fit together semmlessly as if they were mean to be enjoyed together.

The Godfathers and Originators of Detroit House and Techno Music, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, now known and respected around the world as groundbreaking, credit Mojo and the Midnight Funk Association as an early influence in their musical development and he frequently supported and played thier early and history making tracks that launched Detroit techno to the entire world including Inner City’s “Good Life”, Derrick May’s “Strings of Life”, Cybotron’s “Cosmic Cars”, Model 500 “No UFO’s”, “Technicolor”, “R9″ and so many others.

Mojo was known to support and embrace electronic music in it’s early stages and frequently played artists like Africa Bambaataa, Kraftwerk, and New Order as part of his nightly radio show.

Common segments of the legendary radio show included:

* 10:00pm - The Landing of the Mothership. This was the intro to each show with spaceship sound effects and related dialog. Sometimes the music heard during the first hour was indicative of what you’d hear that night; sometimes it would be completely random.

* 11:00pm - Awesome ‘84, ‘85. In the mid eighties, Mojo played an hour of brand new music (hence the year in the title) and a lot of new songs were introduced.

* 11:30pm - Lover’s Lane. A half an hour of “slow jams” for lovers.

* 12:00am - The Midnight Funk Association. Consisted regularly of Parliament-Funkadelic, The Gap Band, Zapp and other funk bands of the era.

From 1:00am to 3:00am (2:00 am on Saturday nights), Mojo’s show was different every night. Sometimes, the MFA would stretch well beyond 1:00am, other times Mojo would introduce segments such as:

* Star Wars - A classic “artist vs. artist” set, where Mojo would alternate selections from two different groups or artists, and the listeners would call in to vote for their favorite.

* Journey - Sometimes a multi-night segment, where Mojo played songs by a single artist or group, spanning their entire career. This usually included a mix of hits and obscure songs by that artist.

* Shout-out - Everyone that called into the station during his show was the recipient of a “shout-out”. He would go on for as long as it took rattling off the first names of every single person who had called in to the show.

* 35-35-35 - Mojo would take suggestions from listeners about their favorite artists and bands. He then would choose the three most popular groups that night and play thirty-five minutes, commercial-free, of each group. This segment often gave airtime to groups that no other radio station in Detroit played.

At other times, Mojo would spend the last 2 hours of his show showcasing live mixes on two turntables, by bringing in local DJs to do the same. One such DJ, Jeff Mills, began his career with Mojo as “The Wizard.” Mojo also would air music by local groups at this time.

In the Metro Detroit Area, The Midnight Funk Association was more than a nightly radio show, it was an event that listeners looked forward to every night for years.

It was common to see cars flashing thier lights at midnight and horns honking on the streets all over town at Midnight.

Mojo crossed color lines and did not adhere to a play list like today’s prepackaged radio stations and while broadcast on stations marketed toward the African-American market, his programming was an inspired blend of the best soul, funk, New Wave, and rock that defied standard radio industry formats and genres.

He believed that good music had no color, and should not be packaged into “Black” stations, and “White” stations, a concept still lost on today’s radio station owners, and program managers.

Electrifying Mojo and his Midnight Funk Association was the last of the great radio shows, and the last show that had any originality, and independent thought outside of a prestructured play list or carefully crafted demographic studies.

By following his love of music and adhering to a standard of just playing what was good,  Mojo accomplished something that radio has been unable to do since.  Capture a cross section of music lovers that encompassed every age, race, and finacial demographic, and create listeners andloyal fans that tuned in simply because they loved the DJ and the music.

Most recently, Mojo is serving as Program Director for a handful of Detroit radio stations - he does not publicize which ones - and he was in negotiations to bring his show to XM satellite radio in 2006, but so far nothing has been heard about it.

Fans from all over still speak of the legendary radio show, as well as, others who have heard about it and what it meant to so many, for so long.

For those of us that were there, The Midnight Funk Association will live in our hearts forever, and we will always be card carrying members.

It was truly one of the last great radio shows of our time.

Wireless technology depends on wireless access points or a wireless router to send and receive these signals wirelessly to and from a laptop through the wireless device attached to it. A practical distance limitation exists between a laptop’s wireless connection interface and the nearest wireless router or wireless access point for wireless technology to work.

Laptops can be used to access the Internet and connect to Bluetooth enabled devices and wireless office networks wirelessly. Wireless technology uses RF signals transmitted over air. A wireless device is attached through a laptop wireless connection interface to a laptop.

This can be extended through an external wireless RF signal booster antenna attached through a suitable interface on a laptop to about 3 miles. This antenna can also be termed as a laptop wireless booster. The wireless antenna uses signal gain control technology to extend the range of transmission of RF signals.

The wireless LAN or wireless LAN card alternatively on the laptop needs to be switched on and correctly configured as some of the prerequisite conditions for this connectivity.

An option for laptop wireless connection to the Internet can be an external USB wireless modem attached on a USB port of a laptop.

Bluetooth technology is a special application of wireless technology. It uses short-range RF signals at 2.4 GHz to achieve wireless signal transmission within a distance ceiling of 10 meters.

Through Bluetooth technology, a laptop equipped with an integrated Bluetooth adaptor (laptop wireless connection interface) can be wirelessly connected to Bluetooth enabled cellphones or barcode readers or to a Bluetooth base station within the prescribed distance limitation and data or files shared or transferred mutually between the synchronized devices at the two ends of the connection..

For the above to be achieved in practice, Bluetooth adaptors on devices at both ends of the connection need to be switched on and the necessary password permissions assigned on these devices.

The major advantage of a laptop wireless connection is ‘on the move’ seamless connectivity to the Internet, to wireless office networks, and to similarly equipped Bluetooth devices from a laptop. This provides convenience and independence to a mobile laptop user.

The benefits of a laptop wireless connection are manifold. Some of them include complete avoidance of unwieldy, expensive, and problematic wired connectivity on a laptop to achieve the same tasks, and wireless connection sharing facility among two or more laptops.

In the case of wireless connectivity to an office network from a laptop, wireless LAN on the laptop connects to a wireless office network through the internal antenna of an onboard integrated wireless LAN if so available on the laptop or alternatively through the antenna on the wireless LAN card if so available and inserted on the PCMCIA slot of a laptop.

In the United States, Prison Break has established itself as a top rating series, averaging about 10 million viewers per episode. However, its popularity has extended beyond the borders of the United States, gaining much positive reception outside in other countries as well.

Prison Break, a thriller-drama series on the Fox Network, features a man who was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit and his brother’s intricate plan to save him. Created by Paul Scheuring, the show has acquired numerous nominations from various award-giving bodies.

Prison Break has tapped the Asian viewers, most especially capturing the action-thriller seekers of China. In fact, despite the banning of the government to broadcast Prison Break due to its violent themes, many have disregarded the prohibition and have resorted to seek the black market for illegal copies of its DVDs. Given this prohibition; it is quite ironic that a Chinese production company has bought the rights to remake the drama series for $1.2 million.

Although ironic, the news is actually not too surprising since the series already has an existing fan base worldwide. Taking advantage of Prison Break ’s fame, the Chinese production company will make the most out of its franchise by turning the series into a two-hour movie. As of the moment, details regarding the exact plot of the said movie have not yet been made public although many anticipate that it would feature the same characters on the show to ensure instant fame.

Prison Break seems to be rubbing off its popularity on to its Chinese version as it draws hype to the movie even before it started production.

The question is, will the Chinese version be able to surpass or even equal Prison Break’s fame without its infamous stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell and the rest of the cast? What do you think?

The Amari Midnight Run, which has now entered its 11th year, shows no signs of slowing down as large crowds gather each year for this great sporting extravaganza. The popularity of the Amari Midnight Run can be attributed to the enthusiasm of the organizers as well as the fun party atmosphere that prevails despite it being a serious sporting event. The added novelty of being Bangkok’s only night time long distance running event also adds extra luster.

More than 3,000 people took part in last year’s event which concluded in the month of October. Competitors had the option of either running for the 6km race or the 12 km race; the more amateur runners mostly opted for the 6 km race while the more advanced professionals took parting the grueling 12 km race. Of course some of the more daring amateur participants do take part in the 12 km race but to no avail, however as in every sporting event what matters is not to win but to take part!

Unlike the night races in London or Berlin where competitors are greeted with cool temperatures and virtually deserted city streets, Bangkok offers a whole new experience- the nights are as hot and humid as the day and the traffic does not ease up! The most striking feature of the race are the enthusiastic crowds that line the course, waving flags and cheering the competitors onward.

Many consider the Amari Midnight Race to be a season opener for the other numerous sports events that are staged in Bangkok. More than 1,000 runners took part this year and organizers expect the number to grow further in coming years.
